Alfredo Ripstein, Helped to Shape Mexico's Movie Industry

MEXICO CITY — Alfredo Ripstein, a Mexican film producer whose prolific and influential career stretched from the country's cinematic Golden Age in the 1940s to the dawn of the 21st century, has died. He was 90.

Even if you've never been interested in graffiti, you can't help but appreciate the street art that these guys have been creating since the 80's. The video above really highlights the success of the Tats Cru with a testament from rapper Fat Joe and others.

I worked with the Tats Cru on a McDonald's project back in 2004 and these guys are among the top two or three graffiti artists/crews in New York City if not the World! John Mayer even featured them in his new video, "Waiting On The World To Change" along with famous artists Futura 2000 and Daze (featured in entry below).

Mexican Arts Enriching New York City

The Calpulli Mexican Dance Company (a.k.a. Calpulli Danza Mexicana) was founded in 2003 by a group of artists who sought to enrich the quality of Mexican traditional dance in New York City. As a not-for-profit organization, its mission is to teach and produce dance-based programming incorporating live music and theatre to promote a diverse image of Mexican cultural heritage.

Calpulli is a word of the Nahuatl language referring to the groups or clans categorized by trade, which contributed to the whole of the Aztec civilization. This young, energetic group is a calpulli of artists.

Bob Ojeda of the Count Basie Orchestra

When most people think of the Count Basie Orchestra, images of Duke Ellington or Count Basie himself come to mind. However, trumpet player and music arranger, Bob Ojeda, a Chicago born Mexican American, was with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1985-2001. (Bob is standing middle backrow with the mustache)

Bob's big band career began in 1958, though still in his teens, when he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He also played with Woody Herman, Ralph Flanagan, and others. Bob studied arranging with the reknown William Russo, Frank Foster, and Bill Matthews.

Bob has written arrangements for big bands, including the Basie organization, as well as music for other notable singers, television series, and hollywood movies. He can be seen and heard on the 1987 DVD "Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra". Bob is seated next to the drummer's high hat, and plays several solos. His arrangement of "Everyday I Have The Blues" can be heard on this DVD.

The reason I am writing this entry is because Bob Ojeda is my father's first cousin and his parents are originally from Del Rio and Lytton Springs, Texas, where they worked in the farming industry along with my grandmother, Eloisa Ojeda Limon.

If you haven't been to Centrico in New York's Tribeca neighborhood, put it on your 2007 list of things to do!

Centrico ('centrally located' in Spanish), the latest concept from renowned restaurateur Drew Nieporent, is a fresh interpretation of regional Mexican cuisine. Partnering with Nieporent is Aarón Sanchez, Centrico's chef, cookbook author and Food Network star. With the new restaurant, Aarón, son of the legendary chef Zarela Martinez, goes back to his roots to cook the Mexican food of his childhood.

"Mexican cuisine is an integral part of the American culinary experience," says Aarón, "and my cooking celebrates that." His food marries Mexican tradition with an American perspective, emphasizing seasonal ingredients and modern technique. Aarón aims to showcase his homeland's gastronomic depth and variety--which he likens to the diversity of France's provinces. Centrico's menu is a journey through the Mexican states, with picadas (corn tarts with salsa) from Michoacán, torta de mariscos (seafood frittata) from Veracruz, cochinita pibil (slow roasted suckling pig) from the Yucatán, and birria (braised short ribs in ancho chile broth) from Jalisco. Centrico is located in the heart of Tribeca--with a wrap-around full-service terrace overlooking Franklin Street and West Broadway.
